We spent the sunset hours exploring a hidden bay with beautiful scenery for this free-spirited Maui engagement session by the shore. It was so fun to wander the bay with Claudia + Kevin, watching baby goats frolic into the trees to hide and talking about all things art (they happen to be rather artistic themselves)! The location we chose has a beautiful history of being a pathway that royals used to walk, so it felt really special being able to follow the shoreline trail considering all of the stories the sandy beaches and lava rocks might contain. History isn’t the only incredible part of this spot, either. The views along the coast are really lovely and the light at sunset is perfect for an engagement session!
Nestled just past Kihei, Maui this little coastal refuge requires a pretty fun offroad adventure to get to! Once you arrive, there is no cell service and while there are a couple of outhouses, there are no services. I think it really lends to the experience of being somewhere that Hawaiian royals had once traveled to such remote spots on the island. Despite that this spot is one of the driest on Maui, there are pretty palms and pockets of beautiful wildflowers if you look closely enough.
The scenery in this spot is made ever more dramatic by the stark contrast of black lava rock against white sand. When Haleakala Volcano last erupted, the flow of lava covered the former villages of the area in a layer of jagged lava which is called a’a lava. This eruption was the last recorded lava flow on the island of Maui and the wild black lava rock that covers this area is one of the most unique views you can see here.
The mix of lava rocks, pretty ocean waters, and interesting trees let our artist hearts run wild! We had such a fun time creating portraits and snippets of the time that these two were enjoying on their trip to Maui.
Another interesting thing about this spot is that while annual rainfall along this coast is only 15 inches, you can get these pretty views of lush green pastures made all the more dramatic by the rolling clouds of Upcountry Maui. When paired with turquoise waves, dark rock, and strikingly colorful sunset skies the combination makes one of the most diverse, beautiful spots on island.
The other awesome part is that when you’re all done with your engagement session, you can hit up Lineage Maui for an amazing meal!
