Sunflower Fields Forever

I have been humming Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles for daaaays as I edited this session! As a local Oahu photographer, I often take my camera along with me for fun outings with friends. On this fall day, I am so glad I did! My friends and I were enjoying the sunflower fields and pumpkin patch, taking photos of one another when I spotted these cuties doing exactly the same. I decided to offer an impromptu 5 minute shoot and we had the best time!

I am always a little bit hesitant to walk up to strangers and ask this kind of thing hahaha you could be interpreted as a creeper. I also never want to ask and have them not be together (imagine walking up to a brother and sister and asking if they are a couple, soooo not cool). That’s why I usually take a minute to observe, even if I am super excited about the idea of a surprise photo shoot. I noticed that they were taking photos of each other and talking about camera settings, but didn’t spy any affection right away so I held off and kept creeping from my row of sunflowers. Then I saw them hold hands and walk up the row and knew all I needed to know!

When I introduced myself and shared that I’m a photographer, I asked if they wanted to get a few shots together. They were game so we had this quick little 5 minute shoot in the flowers before the light went away and the fields closed. I learned that they’d been together for about two months and it had me reminiscing how exciting those first few months of a relationship can be. It inspired the carefree way I photographed them, with her holding sunflowers above her head while on his shoulders. I love the fall feel of this quick session, I can almost trick myself into believing it’s not endless summer here in Hawaii 😉

Fields of flowers, whether they are wildflowers or sunflowers, are always a great backdrop for a couple’s session. Sunflower fields often bloom in the fall in both Oahu’s North Shore and the Kapolei area. There are also some really inspiring fields of sunflowers in Europe and around the world. If you’re thinking of fun ways to capture your story together, think about choosing a floral scene like this!
